Theme Thursday: Crafty

I'll admit, I had a good, hearty laugh when I saw the theme for today. Those of you who follow my blog on a regular basis know I'm not exactly the crafty type. (If not, please refer to this post from October). Many people I know assume-incorrectly-since I'm a classical violinist, I'm at least proficient in art, or any kind of vocal performance, or anything that involves creating something beautiful out of random household objects. Ummm, no. The sight of a hot glue gun or glitter makes me twitch uncomfortably. The thought of sitting down at a sewing machine or gathering a bunch of yarn and knitting something pretty makes me want to run screaming into the night. In other words, I'm not exactly the kind of mom who hauls out a plastic bin full of buttons, sequins, ModPodge (or whatever the heck it's called) and puts my kids to work. Nope. Coloring books and crayons are the extent of my craftiness. Anyway, enough about me. Well...not exactly.

My son turned three not even two weeks ago, and he's been going through a major fire truck craze lately. While I may have zero desire to craft, I absolutely love "crafting" food in the kitchen. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm destined to be on The Next Great Baker. I'll be honest, though; while I might whip together a mean tiramisu, or throw together a Sunday dinner that would make Carmela Soprano beg for tips, cake decorating is, shall we say, not my strongest area. But no matter! I was determined to make Tony a wonderful, nay, the best fire truck cake that ever graced the planet. Buddy Valastro ain't got nothing on me. I scoured Pinterest, random Google images of fire truck cakes, and finally discovered a (non-fondant...I don't have the courage for that one yet) fire truck cake from Betty Crocker. I scoffed at the ingredients-buy a box of mix cake and pre-made frosting? No way, not for my child!-and set to work. I even suffered from the cringe-worthy video of two overly cheerful women (whom I'm convinced were on Valium...I've never seen two people so excited to make a cake), and I was convinced I was golden. So. Here's the original Betty Crocker cake:

Aaaaaaannnnnd here's my cake.

Nailed. It.

Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, Cupcake Wars...I'll be waiting on your call.

  1. I actually think it looks pretty good! Especially for a 3 year old. Plus, you get bonus points for the Sopranos reference. (Oh and 99% of fondant tastes gross so even if it looks pretty it ruins the cake.)

    1. Haha, thanks! The Sopranos have always been a guilty pleasure of mine. The Italian thing and all. ;) I was feeling pretty good about the cake until my husband came home, and said, "yeah, I think it looked better in the picture you sent me." (He received the silent treatment from me for a while).
