Green Goddess

This isn't a recipe, per se, but the whole concept of using a juicer is so cool (and completely foreign to me, I might add!) that I couldn't resist blogging about it. Our friend Tom next door has been on a juicing diet for over a month, and he's doing a terrific job of sticking with it. While I don't have THAT much willpower, I will admit the idea of juicing was pretty cool. I had such a horrible aversion to leafy greens during my first trimester, and I felt guilty that T-Quad wasn't getting the nutrients he/she needed. I'm thrilled to finally be able to eat salads again, but I kind of wanted to play "catch up" with my diet. While it wouldn't be practical or particularly beneficial to me to replace a meal with juice, I really liked the idea of supplementing my meals with a healthy veggie and fruit drink. Not to mention, I think it's incredibly cool that I can just shove whole vegetables and fruits in the juicer without having to do any chopping or peeling. With my first juice experiment, I wasn't expecting a whole lot. I just figured I would add the veggies that would give me the most nutrients, and a couple of fruits that I found appealing. Here's what I came up with:
Spinach, kale, 2 celery stalks, a cucumber, an apple and two pears. It was surprisingly delicious, and I can just FEEL this little baby inside of me becoming a crunchy granola health nut who owns and operates a Bikram yoga studio. *nods* Anyway, it was very easy and quite enjoyable to make this drink. For those of you who have never "juiced" before (I feel so weird saying that), here's how you do it:
As you can imagine, the cleanup of the machine was a bit of a pain, but nothing too difficult. Also, juicing machines tend to be VERY noisy. Do not attempt if you have a little one sleeping. I'm really glad I gave this a try, and I definitely see more healthy afternoon snacks in the form of veggie drinks in my future! Thanks for the use of your juicer, Tom. You're the man.

  1. I'm glad you liked the juice! It can be a surprisingly tasty way to get a lot of nutrients in a hurry. Feel free to keep the juicer as long as you like.

In the Shreveport food world "Green Goddess" is, or was, the green salad dressing you could get with crackers at Murrells. I've never seen someone order a salad at Murrells but green goddess and crackers were quite popular. Murrells is closed and demolished now. It was not the cleanest place. The kind of joint where you wouldn't even consider the salad.

  3. Thanks Tom!! We really appreciate it. :) I've never heard of Murrell's, but considering it wasn't a clean place I'm kind of glad I never ate there.

Mom-I think it would be just my luck if T-Quad turned out to be a tree hugging hippie! Hehehe.

  4. Marisa, we purchased a Vita-Mix blender when they promoted them at the Ramstein BX. Aaron had wanted one for a long time and I remember thinking the price was kind of steep for a blender. Holy cow was I wrong! That blender is amazing and is worth every penny. You'd have to pry that thing out of my cold, dead hands :)
